If you’ve ever bitten into a gluten-free English muffin and immediately knew it was gluten-free—in the not-so-good way—you’re not alone. That telltale aftertaste, the dry texture, the weird chew… it can be a letdown. But not all gluten-free English muffins are created equal. We put two popular brands to the test in a blind tasting to find out which freezer English muffin delivers the most flavor, best texture, and overall best experience. Spoiler alert: one of these might just become your new breakfast staple.
How We Tested English Muffins
Just like in our gluten-free frozen waffle test and gluten-free vanilla sandwich cookies, we kept things fun and fair. No one knew which English muffin was which. Each was labeled A or B and scored based on:
- Taste
- Texture
- Appearance
We used a 3-point scale for each category (0-2, where 0 is bad and 2 is good), then averaged the results. I also asked testers to write down their honest reactions—some of which were hilarious.
We have three gluten-loving people and one person that gluten hates (that’s me). My goal is always to test gluten-free foods with people who eat gluten because the best gluten-free products taste just like regular food.

I picked two of the most widely available, highly rated brands:
All English muffins are gluten-free, come frozen, and were defrosted before the taste test.

Review of Food for Life Gluten Free Brown Rice English Muffins
Taste: The taste was generally met with dissatisfaction. Comments included “worse as you chew”, “starts off promising and ends with questioning your existence”, and “not taste like a traditional English muffin”. One person found it “fine, but like it could use some salt, and it’s a little grainy.”
Texture: Texture feedback varied significantly. One review noted it was “Pretty good texture like it’s crunchy and has a nice chewy bit in the middle,” and another called it “spongy.” In contrast, some found it highly undesirable, with one person remarking, “If you told me this was 25% cardboard, I would say makes sense.” Another detailed account noted a crispier outside when toasted, but the whole thing became “just dry” and had a “crumbly texture that sticks in your teeth” after being split and re-toasted.
Appearance: The appearance also received mixed reviews. One individual thought, “It looks pretty good like a regular non-gluten-free muffin.” However, other observations included “looks like a homemade mistake,” and comments about it being “Not very toasty looking” despite requiring “a lot longer in the toaster oven.”
Overall Impression: The Food for Life English Muffins garnered a range of opinions across taste, texture, and appearance, with a general leaning towards dissatisfaction in taste. One tester perfectly captured the taste experience, noting it started “Ok, but then it gets oddly worse.”
Review of Glutino Gluten Free English Muffins
Taste: The taste was highly praised, with comments like “pretty good, like good saltiness to it, and it would be good with butter, and it’s pretty sweet”, “YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”, and “flavor is on point”. The taste was also described as “nice and light, with a sweeter finish,” making it versatile for both “sweet or savory toppings.”
Texture: The texture was generally well-regarded for its interesting combination. It was noted as “pretty good” with an “outside nice and crunchy, but inside kind of feels like a sponge.” Simple descriptions included “soft” and “crunch + soft = delish.” A more detailed observation highlighted it as “Very springy in texture on the inside” with “nicely crispy” outsides, maintaining a “crunchy” top and “springy” underside even after being split and re-toasted.
Appearance: The appearance was mostly positive, although some specific details were mentioned. One person thought, “It looks pretty good like normal English muffins,” but questioned if they were “supposed to be flat.” Other comments included “looks fine, but who cares, it doesn’t have to be perfect if it tastes great!” A final observation noted it had “a nice golden color with toasted edges” and that “The cornmeal on top makes it look more authentic.”
Overall Impression: The Glutino Gluten Free English Muffins received largely positive feedback across all categories. The taste was a standout, with one reviewer enthusiastically declaring, “YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Frequently Asked Questions About Gluten-Free English Muffins
How do gluten-free English muffins compare to regular English muffins?
The Glutino brand was similar to other pre-made English muffins from the store shelf. Would these compare to a bakery-made or home-made English muffin? No, but I think that’s an unfair comparison.
What are the best ways to enjoy gluten-free English muffins?
I love them with salted butter or as an egg sandwich. However, one of my kids likes strawberry jam and the other likes peanut butter.
Are gluten-free English muffins healthier than wheat-based English muffins?
Gluten-free foods aren’t inherently healthier. They are foods that are able to be eaten by people who can’t eat gluten. Please check the ingredient labels to determine how healthy a food is.
